you can do this with no algebra at all 
think of two numbers that add to 47 and are three apart

for example $20+27$ add to 47, but they are not 3 apart, lets try again

$$25+22=47$$ and they are also three apart, so $25$ and $22$ will do the trick

you can also write $$x+y=47\
x-y=3$$ if you want to do it the math teacher way

add them up in a column, get $$2x=50$$ telling you that $x=25$ so $y=22$ but this is largely a waste of time, doing the algebra way
