The main reason was that being a colony meant a huge economic disadvantage (trade was limited, taxes, ...). Some other reasons were different main religion (protestant America and Anglican Britain), enlightening movements (new rights, yearning for independence) and being forced to help Britain in matters of war (through taxes and industry if nothing else)
