`Find the average rate of change` is the same as finding the slope of the linear equation for nonlinear equations, you are finding the slope of the straight line through the two points (that correspond to the two x values)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Average rate of change equation is f(b)-f(a)/b-a So you first find the corresponding y value to your x value then you plug those numbers to the numerator and the denominator are your given x values

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So x=-1 the y value is -1 x=2 the y value is 5 [5-(-1)]/2-(-1) =2
