OpenStudy (blackfireskull):

What are the drawbacks of desalinating water?

OpenStudy (rushwr):

Any answers given ?

OpenStudy (blackfireskull):

nope .-.

OpenStudy (rushwr):

Seawater desalination is not very energy efficient. To turn saltwater into freshwater, it's pushed through a very thin polyamide membrane. While the water molecules pass through with no trouble, salt molecules do not.. This process is known as reverse osmosis. So 1st point is energy inefficiency

OpenStudy (rushwr):

The other problem as i see is the disposal of the highly concentrated brine solution which an inevitable byproduct of desalination.

OpenStudy (blackfireskull):

thank you. i have copied and pasted these into the box. i have also copied and pasted the link in the box as well so my teacher can look at it.

OpenStudy (rushwr):

And also we can say it is expensive. Usually producing water through ocean desalination costs three or more times what it costs to produce water from traditional supplies.

OpenStudy (rushwr):

It could exacerbate global warming.

OpenStudy (rushwr):

yeah that's what I can think of.

OpenStudy (blackfireskull):

thank you!!

OpenStudy (rushwr):

No Problem :)
