OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

The temperature, t, in degrees Fahrenheit

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

@jim_thompson5910

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you know how to solve \[|t-24|\le30\] for \(t\)?

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

would you subtract 24 from 30?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

or add

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you start with \[-30\le t-24\le 30\] then ADD \(24\) all the way across

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you get?

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

t less than or equal to 50?

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

i mean 54

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is what you get on the right how about on the left?

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

do you always have to put the -30 there on the left when you are doing that to inequalities?

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

just for future reference

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you don't always to do anything, but if you have \[|t-a|<p\] you start with \[-p<t-a<p\] like a sandwich

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

oh ok so that goes with all inequalities?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

all that look like the one you have, yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

inequalities with absolute value and "less than"

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

ok so i would have -6 less than or equal to T less than or equal to 54 ?

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

@satellite73

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

@Vocaloid could you help?

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

yes, -6 <= t <= 54 now look at your answer choices and see which t value does not fit the inequality

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

-5? or would it be 0?

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

nope, not quite -6 <= t <= 54 means that t must be between -6 and 54 (inclusive) so which of the answer choices is NOT between -6 and 54?

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

im not sure i sometimes forget if -10 is greater tham -6 or not....

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

remember the rule for negative numbers|dw:1443320186749:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

actually you are not alone it was not until fairly recently that mathematicians ordered the negative numbers so that \(-5<-4\) for example

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

oh ok thanks so I'm still a bit confused though on which one would fit that mold

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

so wouldn't it be -5???

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

nope, not -5 -5 is greater than -6 and less than 54, so -5 fits in the inequality (remember, we're looking for the one that DOESN'T fit the inequality)

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

oh yeah i forgot that part...

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

so it would be 54!

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

54 isn't one of the answer choices

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

no no no sorry

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

i typed wrong instead of 24, its 54 for one of the answer choices

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

well, 24 isn't the answer either 24 is greater than -6 and less than 54 keep trying :)

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

-10?

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

yup, good! -10 is less than -6 so it doesn't fit the inequality

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

the answer is -10

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

oh darn no its -10

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

thanks that was a long process, thanks! Could i have help on another if i make a new question please?

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

sure, tag me if you'd like

OpenStudy (iwanttogotostanford):

okay-thanks ill be making one now
