6. Given the relation below. To be a function, x cannot be what values? (4 Pts) { (18, 13), (-17, 25), (35, 101), (x ,25) }
A function will not have 2 x values that are the same..they can have repeating y values, but no repeating x values. Now all your points are set up like this (x,y) your x values are : 18,-17,35....to be a function, x cannot be any of these make sense ? Or did I totally just confuse the crap out of you ?
no it makes sense
but what about -17 ? it will still be the same coordinate

So you're given this relation `{ (18, 13), (-17, 25), (35, 101), (x ,25) } ` and I'm guessing you're also given a list of answer choices?
no
x cannot be any of the x values that you already have because x cannot be repeated to be a function.
ok so you'll just list out the values texaschic101 listed if x were any of those values, you'd have a repeated x which makes you fail the vertical line test. Each input must generate exactly one output. If you had an input producing 2 outputs, which output would you ultimately go with? example: convert 20 celsius to F. If the output was 68 F and 100 F, which is the true output? There can only be one output for this to be a function (that's useful)
nice explaining :)
oh wait, I see what you mean now if x = -17, then (x ,25) turns into (-17 ,25) which is already listed as the second ordered pair
so x = -17 doesn't run into the same issue as x = 18 does
so -17 is not on the list of the ones i cannot use?
@jim_thompson5910
@aaronq
yeah x = -17 is allowed
ohh ok thanks !
no problem
i have another problem. I will link you to it
