whats up?
OpenStudy (becca9898):
\[-7x+3 = \frac{ -15 }{ 2 }\]
OpenStudy (becca9898):
I am unsure where to start :/
OpenStudy (anonymous):
are you solving for just x? or simplifying?
OpenStudy (becca9898):
Solving for x

alright well this is fairly simple.. haha give me a moment?
OpenStudy (becca9898):
Sure! :)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
alright so the first we want to isolate x, right?
OpenStudy (becca9898):
Correct, so would we minus 3/1 ?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
well not 3/1 but just 3

OpenStudy (becca9898):
I just figured the 3/1 because we have to subtract it from the -15/2... Would we have to multiply the 3/1 by 2 to have an equal denominator?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so you will get -7x=-15/2-3
OpenStudy (anonymous):
and yes that would be another way to do it but either way you will get the same answer if you simplify -15/2-3
OpenStudy (anonymous):
do you see what im trying to say? haha
OpenStudy (becca9898):
So if I do -15/2-3 would it just be 15?

what is -15/2 ?
OpenStudy (becca9898):
the problem is I cannot use decimals in this equation, they want me to keep fractions. So -15/2 would just be -15/2 because it cannot be simplified.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
alright sorry i didnt know that
OpenStudy (becca9898):
After doing the math -15/2 - 3/1 should come out to -9/2, right?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
a negative - a negative is?

OpenStudy (becca9898):
a positive?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
it is always a negative so -15-6=-21
OpenStudy (anonymous):
god im getting confused haha let me type the entire problem then ill explain it alright?
OpenStudy (becca9898):
OK :)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
-7x+3=-15/2
-7x=-15/2-3/1*2 "to combine these we need the same denominator so we multiply by two"
-7x=-15/2-6/2
-7x=-21/2

okay haha thats as far as i got now this is where you come in... we will simplify with decimals then replace them with fractions...
OpenStudy (anonymous):
-21/2=-10.5
-7x=-10.5
OpenStudy (anonymous):
divide by -7, isolating x
OpenStudy (anonymous):
x=-10.5/-7
OpenStudy (anonymous):
you get 1.5

1.5= 3/2
so x=3/2
OpenStudy (becca9898):
Thank you!!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
haha is that one of you ranswers?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
no..... thank you, for bearing with me lol
