The _____ principle is used to find the number of strings of eight uppercase English letters that start or end with the letters BO (in that order), if letters can be repeated.

hmm I'm not sure if it's a typo or if it's a computer glitch. But yeah I'm pretty sure it's counting principle. Maybe they are using "multiplication" instead of "counting" ? https://onlinecourses.science.psu.edu/stat414/node/28
