Front end estimation uses the first two digits of the numbers and zeroes for the rest.

To front end estimate 234*57, we take 23 from 234 and replace the 4 with a 0: 230  Now we round that to the nearest 100, as the most significant digit is in the 100s place:
230->200

We take the first two digits from 57, there aren't any more digits to replace with zeroes, so we round 57 to the nearest 10, as that's the place of the most significant place: 57->60

Multiply 200*60 = 12000 to get our front end estimate of 234*57

The true value of 234*57 is 13,338.  Our estimate was off by a bit more than 10%, but was much easier to calculate if you were doing this in your head.
