if there is a 'common factor' to the terms in the expression then you can simplify. FOR INSTANCE - in your expression both terms have a factor of 2 so you could write it as 2(12b-17ab) HOWEVER - there is another common factor so take MY version - and take the other common factor outside teh bracket (alongside the 2)
