Why did Joseph McCarthy do what he did? What was he trying to accomplish?

OpenStudy (darrenmadx):

Joseph McCarthy was a senator who, during the Cold War, accused certain Americans of being communist and causing the Red Scare in the U.S. It was pretty much like the Salem Witch Trials, except the witches were Communists.

I know that, but like is there a reason whyy he did what he did?

OpenStudy (darrenmadx):

I'm not sure why he did what he did or what he was trying to accomplish. you have to take in account how he died. he was a alcoholic and that's why he died. so there may have been no reason but i will research it for you

Awesome ! :)

OpenStudy (darrenmadx):

He surely must have known that he wasn't presidential material. He wasn't doing it for fame or publicity. His alcoholism probably warped his ability to comprehend what was going on around him, and made it easier for a few others to use him as a puppet. He probably wanted to be famous and be remembered even if he was actually worried about communist influence in American government. In the end, of course, his actions went way off the rails and still stand as the best example of a witch hunt since Salem.
