Luster, streak, hardness, and fluorescence are typically the more common forms of identification. Though chemical properties are commonly used within other fields of science, minerals are identified moreso by physical traits. Take a mineral that seems overly "shiny", for instance. One would describe how the mineral has a luster about it, how the physical property is the reflection of light.
