PLZ HELP Solve for x: |3x + 12| = 18 the answers are a x = 2, x = –10 b x = 2, x = –2 c x = 10, x = –10 d x = –2, x = 10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A- x=2, x=-10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A

thanks can you guys help me with another?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sure

Lana makes $8 an hour plus $12 an hour for every hour of overtime. Overtime hours are any hours more than 40 hours for the week. Part A: Create an equation that shows the amount of wages earned, W, for working x hours in a week when there is no overtime. (3 points) Part B: Create an equation that shows the amount of wages earned, S, for working y hours of overtime. Hint: Remember to include in the equation the amount earned from working 40 hours. (3 points) Part C: Lana earned $368 in 1 week. How many hours (regular plus overtime) did she work? (4 points)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

anyone there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hi! :) Give me a minute to work it out and i will help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, for part A, being that there are no specified amount of hours worked that week, but the variable for hours worked is X, the equation for A is X(8)=W because X is obviously hours worked and she gets 8 dollars per hour before overtime, so X times 8 is equal to W (wages earned). Once you find out how many hours she worked you could plug that in for X.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry im confused

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, so X is the amount of hours worked, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When there is no overtime, how much does she earn per hour?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, so lets just say and pretend for a minute she worked 2 hours that week, how much money would she earn?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

16$

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and how did you get that? By multiplying 2x8 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, even if we don't know the number of hours she worked yet, we would still have to multiply some number by 8$. So, recall that X is the number of hours she worked (but we don't know that that value is)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be w=8x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, X8=W

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yea!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you understand how that comes to be tho?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why don't you give part B a try and ill check your answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is the S in the problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Overtime hours worked

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

W=8x + 12 x y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes! That looks good!! it should have been S=8x+12y instead of W=8x+12y but that is my fault, i accidentally told you the wrong thing for S, but yes you did it well! Did you want to try C and ill check your answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sure
