"Federalism" is the process by which two or more governments share powers over the same geographic area.

The glossary of my text book defines federalism as "the division of powers among local, state, and national governments". Many nations have a federal system, so for a more in-depth definition I would need more specification. American federalism has two perspectives: The cooperative federalism view, and the dual federalism view. Both views attempt to make clear lines of jurisdiction for the powers of each government division.
