i need help i don't know how to do this What is the value of a?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

here is the problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

giving medal

OpenStudy (katnissstyles000):

wait thats the problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whats the value of a?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

16 maybe im not sure

OpenStudy (freckles):

try using the distributive property on -2(a-8) first.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a = 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmmm thats the deal i dont under stand how this works im not the biggest on math

OpenStudy (freckles):

All the distributive property says is a(b+c)=ab+ac take the factor on the outside and multiply on all terms by it on the inside the ( ). so -2(a-8)=?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so multiply thes numbers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-16

OpenStudy (freckles):

-2(a-8) multiply every term inside the ( ) by -2 so you have -2*a-2(-8) -2a+16

OpenStudy (freckles):

so rewrote your equation as: -2a+16+6a=36

OpenStudy (freckles):

now combine like terms on the left hand side

OpenStudy (freckles):

so you ask yourself what is -2a+6a or 6a-2a (since these are the same value)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so i got 20 when i added every thing except the letters

OpenStudy (freckles):

oh do you mean you did 36-16 which is 20?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

bu the letters are 16 each

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (curiousquestions):

a=5 for definate

OpenStudy (freckles):

ok so you still have -2a+16+6a=36 -2a+6a=36-16 -2a+6a=20 or 6a-2a=20 if you reorder the left hand side

OpenStudy (freckles):

6-2=?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4

OpenStudy (freckles):

right so 6a-2a=(6-2)a=4a

OpenStudy (freckles):

\[4a=20\]

OpenStudy (freckles):

now you finally get to see how everyone is getting a=5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh ok i get it thatnk you soo much
