What is the estimated value of the expression if each number in the expression is rounded to the nearest whole unit? (4.18)(1.93)(8.72)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@whpalmer4 Umm i got 0

OpenStudy (alexandervonhumboldt2):

use the calculator to do this. Or there is not permited to use it? your answer is not correct if the sing between the ( ) is multiplication

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ty

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

okay, if we round to the nearest whole unit, what are the rounded off values of 4.18, 1.93 and 8.72?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

"nearest whole unit" means "nearest counting number"

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

"unit" <--> "1" in this context

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay....let me think. Btw this is my worst topic ever

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Have no fear, I'm here :-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay :3 well........

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

4.18 - is that closer to 4, or 5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

very good. if we use my method from previous problem, we are rounding to the 1's place, so we add 0.5 4.18 +0.5 ----- 4.68 drop everything after the place where we are rounding 4 our first number is (4) how about the next two?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this not the place for this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like u said;

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There....now where were we?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Okay, so we had "simplified" our expression from \[(4.18)(1.93)(8.72)\] to \[(4)(1.93)(8.72)\] but we still need to round the second two numbers before multiplying to get our estimate

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

what is the nearest counting number to 1.93?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

as an old math teacher of mine used to say when someone answered without conviction in their voice, "is that an answer, or a prayer?" :-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lol X'D 2

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

that's better! How about the third one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

correctamundo. so now we have which 3 numbers to multiply together?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

uh 4*2*9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:_:

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

which equals...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

=72

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

excellent! if we'd done the problem as originally stated, we would have 70.347728 so our estimate is pretty good, and a lot less work!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you (:

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

you're welcome, of course

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it would be 70.347728 or do with take off some numbers?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

70.34 O.O

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

No, the answer is 72. I'm just telling you what we would have gotten if we hadn't done an estimate, but instead multiplied the 3 original numbers in all of their magnificence :-)
