For which equations below is x = –3 a possible solution? Check all that apply. |x| = 3 |x| = –3 |–x| = 3 |–x| = –3 –|x| = –3 –|x| = 3

Do you know what \[|x|\] means?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hello??

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

okay, |x| means the absolute value of \(x\), which is just the positive value if it is negative. |3| = 3 |-3| = 3 if x > 0, |x| = x if x < 0, |x| = -x

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

so, let's go through the answer choices |x| =3 is that true if x = -3? |x| = -3 is that true if x = -3? No, it is not, because the absolute value is never negative -|x| = 3 is that true if x = -3? No, same reason. If |x| is positive, -|x| is negative, and there is no negative number equal to 3. For that matter, most positive numbers aren't equal to 3 either :-) I think you should be able to work out the rest from this.
