What was the Great Migration and why did it occur?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The Great Migration was the movement of 6 million African Americans out of the rural Southern United States to the urban Northeast, Midwest, and West that occurred between 1910 and 1970.African Americans migrated to escape racism, to seek employment opportunities in industrial cities (many factories were seeking help because all their white workers had been drafted into WWI), to get better education for their children, and to pursue what was widely perceived to be a better life. Another factor behind the migration of millions of African Americans was the fact that the boll weevil, a beetle, was destroying their cotton crops.
