Consider the new world. Nations, i.e. Europe were in a constant battle to obtain more wealth, and having colonies was a means of doing that. Consider the 13 colonies, in america were dependent on Britain for protection, and were a source of resources. Imperialism is the result of expansion/exploration. if you read guns germs and steel, the europeans had an advantage because they domesticated animals and became immune to diseases that the native(s) weren't. once the natives were exposed to these diseases, they died off in large numbers. european technology was another issue. So, consider that there were other factors underlying european expansion, but exploration was a driving factor that depended on finding new and quicker avenues of trade.
