OpenStudy (ayeeeitskateee):

Determine whether y varies directly with x. If so, find the constant of variation k and write the equation. x y 4 6.4 7 11.2 10 16 13 20.8 Please show your work and give me an explanation. I have a test coming up and I am really stuck on these types of questions. I'd like to write this in my notebook for future reference and practice. :) Thanks! Will medal/fan as always.

OpenStudy (ribhu):

y=kx

OpenStudy (ayeeeitskateee):

As I said, please give an explanation and show your work. I don't want just an answer. I like to learn!! Thank you though.

OpenStudy (ayeeeitskateee):

I'm really not sure how to do it at all. :(

OpenStudy (ribhu):

okay.. put 6.4=4*k

OpenStudy (ayeeeitskateee):

* means multiply, right? Or no?

OpenStudy (ribhu):

yes its multiply....and you can do this calculation for all the sets.. then check if you get a consistent k.. if k is same throughout.. then y is linearly dependent

OpenStudy (ayeeeitskateee):

Okay, I think I got it.

OpenStudy (ribhu):

okay no problem.. may you do well in your test

OpenStudy (ayeeeitskateee):

Thank you!

OpenStudy (ayeeeitskateee):

@ribhu Hey, I wanted to ask a question. When it says "write the equation" what would the equation be? I figured out that they all equal 1.6, so thank you. but i don't know what it means by equation.

Nnesha (nnesha):

y = kx where k is the constant of variation k =1.6 in this question so replace k with 1.6 that would be the equation

OpenStudy (ayeeeitskateee):

Okay, thanks! @nnesha
