@Nnesha
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I had gotten 4=10*25
OpenStudy (anonymous):
How would I find y if x=25?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
How do I solve this problem? @freckles

I'm not really understanding.
OpenStudy (freckles):
y varies with x
means
y=kx
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Ok
OpenStudy (freckles):
assuming it varies directly anyways
OpenStudy (freckles):
oh actually that is the form it gives in the last sentence

OpenStudy (freckles):
y=kx
so anyways you need to find the constant of variation k
constant means no matter what x and y is the constant will keep being the same number
OpenStudy (freckles):
so we can find k given (x,y)=(10,4)
OpenStudy (freckles):
replace x with 10
replace y with 4
and solve for the constant k
OpenStudy (anonymous):
10/4

OpenStudy (freckles):
so you replace y with 4
and x with 10
in the equation y=kx
so that g ives
4=k(10)
try again...
OpenStudy (freckles):
k is being multiplied by 10
OpenStudy (freckles):
to get k by itself you need to divide both sides by 10
OpenStudy (anonymous):
4/10=10k/10 ?
OpenStudy (freckles):
so k=?

OpenStudy (anonymous):
.4
OpenStudy (freckles):
10/10=1
and 1k=k
so you have 4/10=k right?
and you can reduce 4/10 as 2/5 or I guess you can choose also to write it as .4 as you just did
OpenStudy (freckles):
so you had y=kx
and you just found k to be .4
y=.4x
OpenStudy (freckles):
this is the equation you have and now you know k
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Oh thank you soo much!!

OpenStudy (freckles):
now the last step is to solve for y when x is 25
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ok one sec
OpenStudy (freckles):
y=.4x
y=.4(25)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
10
OpenStudy (freckles):
yes 4*25 is 100
since 4 quarters is a dollar
and .4*25=10
great
so when x is 25 y is 10
