anyone help i suck at fractions

OpenStudy (anonymous):

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

how far did you get? anywhere at all?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1/5u = 1/3 + 1/4 -1/5u= 4/12 +3/12 -1/5u= 7/12 u= -5/1 x 7/12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not sure if i did this right

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

very good. You add 1/4 to both sides, get the fractions to have the same denominator (12) and then add then you multiply both sides by the reciprocal of -1/5 to isolate u

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

one last step is to multiply the fractions -5/1 and 7/12 to get ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

35/12?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

-35/12, don't forget the negative

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

35 and 12 have nothing in common (except for 1) in terms of factors, so -35/12 can't be reduced any further
