Simplify the following expression using the distributive property:
2x – 3y + 4(x – y) + 5x
What property do I use after the distributive?

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
can you do the distributive part first?
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
(it will make the flow easier and I can check your work)
OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
2x – 3y + 4xy + 5x
OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
@FibonacciChick666
Directrix (directrix):
2x – 3y + 4(x – y) + 5x
What you you get after you apply the distributive property to 4(x – y)?

OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
but after that what property do I use? commumative, associative?
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
You did not distribute correctly
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
First thing, which is what Direct pointed out. So let's revisit that first
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
Do you understand the link?
OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
oh so it would be 2x – 3y + 4x- 4y + 5x? @fibonaccichick666 @directrix

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
yea good
OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
and then after what property would I use
and could u show me
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
so now, what is our goal?
OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
do I use associative property next? or commumative
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
well, first, what is our goal?

OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
combine like terms? @FibonacciChick666
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
yea, so does commutative or associative allow you to move terms around?
OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
commumative
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
(get all the like terms in one place is another way to say our goal)
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
Good! so, go ahead, make it so

OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
so 2x - 4x + 5x+ 3y + 4y?
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
why is it -4x?
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
and +3y?
OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
i dont know how to put it @FibonacciChick666
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
what do you mean? you just moved the terms around. You have to move the whole term, not just part of it

OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
i dont understand.. how do you change it around? @FibonacciChick666
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
you literally just pick up term and move it. Like moving blocks on the floor when you were a kid. Let's say you had blue, red, yellow block. in that order, but you wanted red before blue, so you pick up the red block and move it in front of the blue or you pick up the blue bock and put it behind the red. Make sense? Now your blocks are terms (+4x or -4y etc) Just move them like you would blocks
OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
2x – 4x + 5x- 4y + 3y?
OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
@FibonacciChick666
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
did you have a -4x before you moved stuff around? Did you have a +3y?

+3y
OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
@FibonacciChick666
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
What's that mean?
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
full sentences please. Or at least semi-full fragments
OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
I had +3y @FibonacciChick666

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
I don't see a +3y, can you point it out?
\[''2x – 3y + 4x- 4y + 5x?"\]
OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
right after the 2x there's a 3y
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
I don't see a plus sign in front of it
OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
oh its negative 3?
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
yea

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
commutative only works for addition so technically its +(-3y)
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
but so long as you bring the negative along for the ride, that's too many symbols to write all the time
OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
so what is i t 2x + 4x- 5x 4y -3y? @FibonacciChick666
OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
or could just explain it and right it down
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
this is your equation :
\[2x – 3y + 4(x – y) + 5x=2x – 3y + 4x –4 y + 5x\]
Now starting from there. Move the +5x to a better spot

2x + 5x?
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
you have to write the whole thing, you can't just leave off the rest
OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
2x + 5x + 4x - 4y - 3y?
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
multiple steps, but yes
OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
so the equation is right?

not simplified yet, but correct to this point
OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
so added up it becomes 11x - 1y? @FibonacciChick666
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
what's a negative plus a negative?
OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
a positive
OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
11x1y?

no... thats times not addition
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
what is -6+-7
OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
-14?
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
close, that would be -7+-7
OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
-13 * sorry lol

I thought it might be a type-0
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
so what is -4y-3y
OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
but isnt this subtracting not adding?
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
aka -4y+-3y
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
There is no such thing as subtraction or division actually

OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
it wouldbe -7y
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
there we go
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
so final answer is?
OpenStudy (bossimbacon):
11x - 7y?
OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
yep
