I have a question regarding organic chem lab

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is the question

OpenStudy (aaronq):

The silica column is polar, so the eluting solvent will be of a more non-polar nature, therefore non-polar molecules will interact more strongly with the eluting solvent more than the column. So the most polar will be elute last and the most non-polar will elute first.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how would i know if something is polar?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

from the functional groups present and the geometry of the molecule

OpenStudy (aaronq):

look for permanent dipole moments

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks

OpenStudy (aaronq):

no problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cant figure out whats wrong

OpenStudy (aaronq):

that's not the right order. the most non-polar is the one that is a hydrocarbon, then the aromatic ring, then the alcohol and then the acid
