The coordinates A(0, 0), B(0, 5) and C(3, 0) are graphed and connected together. What 3-dimensional shape will be created when this shape is rotated about the y-axis? Provide an explanation and proof for your answer to receive full credit.

`The coordinates A(0, 0), B(0, 5) and C(3, 0) are graphed and connected together` what 2D shape is formed?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know.

@jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

why not plot them and find out? go ahead and give it a shot

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jim_thompson5910 A triangle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes because there are only 3 points that are plotted and connected so there are 3 sides of the shape and there is only one shape with 3 sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What about when it's rotated?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cam you post a pic of it when it is plotted

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I didn't have any kind of graph paper, I just used my imagination.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it would still be a triangle

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Yes you'll have a triangle. If you rotated that triangle around the y axis, you'll get a 3D cone. It might be hard to imagine, so grab a piece of paper, cut out a triangle, then spin the triangle around its axis.
