Can someone help me figure out the logic behind the differentiation of this term?

So why does that necessitate the use of the chain rule?

It's been a couple of years since I took calculus, and I know I should know this, but it's not making sense to me.

I keep thinking that I should just take the derivative of V and hold all else steady as constants, but that's partial differentiation.

I'm just not sure how to reason this out.
