x x-4 _ = ____ 2 3

OpenStudy (phantomcrow):

Are you asked to solve for x?

OpenStudy (phantomcrow):

If this is a proportion, then first cross multiply and then solve for x.\[\frac{ x }{ 2}=\frac{ x-4 }{ 3 }\]\[3x=2(x-4)\]\[3x=2x-8\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

OpenStudy (phantomcrow):

See where you go from there.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is the part where i get confused

OpenStudy (phantomcrow):

Alright. Just use algebra to solve for x from this point\[3x=2x-8\]\[x=-8\]

OpenStudy (phantomcrow):

It's a matter of isolating x via inverse operation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

where did the 2x go? what did you do to get rid of the 2x

OpenStudy (phantomcrow):

I subtracted it from both sides. I'm trying to get to equal to something and that wont happen if the x's are on different sides of the equation. Since 2x was positive, I perform the opposite of it (subtraction) to both sides, thus cancelling it on the right and subtracting it from 3x on the left.

OpenStudy (phantomcrow):

Are you familiar with solving one variable equations?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh I was over thinking it thank you so much !!!

OpenStudy (phantomcrow):

No problem.
