You have two regions of the number line to be specified here. Answer choices 1 and 3 don't do that, so they can be disregarded. The other two specify those regions, but the question is what the symbol in the middle means. One means intersection (the "overlap" between two sets) and the other means union (everything that is in either set). It is pretty important when doing set theory to know what those two symbols mean. The mnemonic I use is that the U-shaped one will catch a lot of falling stuff, but the upside-down U-shaped one won't catch anything unless it drapes over the top on both sides.
