OpenStudy (popstar30977):

Distinguish between the cell wall and the cell membrane. Please help O_o

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

First, define what a cell wall is and a cell membrane is

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Then you can find the difference

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

@Abhisar

OpenStudy (popstar30977):

a cell membrane- a flexible covering that protects the inside of a cell from the enviornment outside a cell. cell wall- a stiff structure outside the cell membrane that protects a cell from attacks by viruses and othe harmful orgainisms.

OpenStudy (popstar30977):

i dont see the diffrents

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Didnʻt one type of organism have a cell wall, and the other had a cell membrane o-o

OpenStudy (popstar30977):

i have no idea i got it from my science book O_o

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Cell wall - A protective layer external to the plasma membrane in plant cells, bacteria, fungi, and some protists; protects the cell and helps maintain its shape Cell membrane - The thin layer of lipids and proteins that sets a cell off from its surroundings and acts as a selective barrier to the passage of ions and molecules into and out of the cell; consists of a phospholipid bilayer in which proteins are embedded.

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Whipped out my bio book

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

It seems to me that the cell wall is a more external layer of protection that helps keep the shape of the cell and is the first line of defense. The cell membrane(also known as plasma membrane) is the second line of defense but it acts as a "selective barrier." I remember this. Basically it chooses what gets to enter the cell, and what doesnʻt. What stays inside the cell, and what stays outside

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Shadow and popstar already explained the basics, I'll like to add that cell membrane is a universal and living structure found in every cell while cell wall is non-living and found only in some cells like plant, bacteria and fungi cells. Cell membrane is selectively permeable while cell wall is completely permeable.
