Why does sexual reproduction produce offspring with characteristics that are different from their parents, whereas offspring produced through asexual reproduction are identical to their parents?

In sexual reproduction meiosis occurs. During meiosis crossing over and independent segregation occurs. That is main cause for genetic variation. But in mitosis those don't occur. So they are identical to their parent
