A student thinks that because the sun is made of gas, it transfers heat to Earth by convection. Which explains why this is an INCORRECT description of how the sun transfers heat to Earth? A. The space between the Sun and Earth contains no matter B. Convention cannot occur in gases C. Earth can only receive heat in the form of radiation D. Electromagnetic waves do not carry energy

@ParthKohli

@thomaster

OpenStudy (rushwr):

B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you explain?

OpenStudy (rushwr):

They have asked for the wrong description right? So according to B convection cannot occur in gases. Then how can sun transfer heat through convection .

OpenStudy (rushwr):

Cuz it clearly says that sun is made of gases and it transfer heat through convection right?

OpenStudy (rushwr):

I hope u got it :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you :)

OpenStudy (jadedry):

@Rushwr Aren't they asking for a statement that /proves/ that "heat reaches the earth via convection" is incorrect?

OpenStudy (rushwr):

INCORRECT description of how the sun transfers heat to Earth?

OpenStudy (jadedry):

@Rushwr That is the latter part of the sentence: Which explains WHY THIS (referring to the "convection via sun" i assume) is an INCORRECT description

OpenStudy (rushwr):

Which explains why this is an INCORRECT description of how the sun transfers heat to Earth?

OpenStudy (rushwr):

It clearly says that the sun transfers heat through convection. So they are asking for the incorrect answer regarding the heat transfer.

OpenStudy (jadedry):

"A student thinks that because the sun is made of gas, it transfers heat to Earth by convection" I believe that the "incorrect" the question refers to is the incorrectness of the students hypothesis. Heat does not travel via convection in space, space is a vacuum.

OpenStudy (jadedry):

So I think they're asking you which statement /proves/ that the "convection hypothesis" is incorrect.

OpenStudy (jadedry):

@Rushwr

OpenStudy (rushwr):

Ooops yes I agree I agree @Jadedry So what do u think the answer is ! I read it in a hurry and got it wrong !

OpenStudy (jadedry):

@Rushwr It's okay, I've misread many a problem as well haha. I think the answer is C: Earth can only receive heat in the form of radiation Tempted to say A, but there isn't /zero/ matter in space so I don't think that's right. @madiiharrell Could you update us on this question when you get the answer to it please?
