The local elections are being held in Xavier’s town next Tuesday. Xavier is unsure whether or not he will vote. He does not want to read up on the candidates, and he does not care who is mayor. What advice would you give Xavier to help him understand how important it is to be a responsible citizen and vote in local elections?

All laws are made at the state level, so Xavier is right not to be too concerned with local or city elections. Xavier should not vote because he believes his ideas will win even if he doesn’t participate. It is important to show your patriotism by voting even if you do not know anything about the candidates. Local lawmakers can affect many aspects of Xavier’s life, from the taxes he pays on his house to where he can park his car.

Well, laws are made at all levels, local, state, and national, so that is not it. It is a mistake to rely on others to vote for your ideas. Mindless voting is not a form of patriotism. Local lawmakers can have a substantial effect on your life, and are more likely to be knowledgeable and sympathetic to your concerns as someone who lives in the same area than a state or national lawmaker who make have little in common with you.
