Can someone please help me with guess and check factoring?

OpenStudy (quickstudent):

@Nnesha ? I need your help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whats the problem

OpenStudy (quickstudent):

In my homework, I'm supposed to factor the expression x^2 + 8x - 9 using the guess and check method. I know that that means I have to find two numbers that add up make the second term and multiply to make the third term. But I can't think of any numbers that add up to 8 and multiply to -9. I don't know what to do now.

Nnesha (nnesha):

factors of 9 are 1 ,3 9 what two number would you multiply to get -9 but when u add/subtract them you should 8

Nnesha (nnesha):

guess and check so play with signs one of the number suppose to be negative

OpenStudy (quickstudent):

Wait, in the guess and check method you can subtract also?

Nnesha (nnesha):

yes you can you can add or subtract both numbers to get the middle term (b which is 8 in this equation )

OpenStudy (quickstudent):

Oh I got it! -1 and 9. -1 + 9 = 8, and -1 * 9 = -9

Nnesha (nnesha):

\(\huge\color{green}{\checkmark}\) right :=)

OpenStudy (quickstudent):

So the factors should be: (x - 1) (x + 9) Correct?

Nnesha (nnesha):

right leading coefficient is one so you can write it as (x + (1st number)) (x+ (2nd number)) good job! :=)

OpenStudy (quickstudent):

Thanks Didi! :D

Nnesha (nnesha):

np :=) didi ;D
