sub atomic particles are electrons. protons and neutrons they carry the charges that are specific to them so the electrons carry a charge of -1 the protons +1 and neutrons do not have charge. an atom is made up of those three sub atomic particles and an atom has a nucleus which is made up of neutrons and protons so have a positive charge due to the protons and the electrons are in different energy levels around the nucleus.
