The economic expansion after World War II promoted industrial growth. People moved from farming jobs to professional work in these industries, creating wealthier working classes. Professionals working in these growing industries could afford single-family homes. These homes required more space than was available in the city, and the open space in suburbs outside the city provided more pleasant conditions for raising a family.
