How did Abraham Lincoln justify suspending habeas corpus during the Civil War? He was willing to violate the Constitution in order to save the nation. He believed that stopping publication of Copperhead newspapers would help the South. He said states that seceded needed to be punished. The danger of slave revolts called for suspension of some freedoms to ensure public safety.
