A bit later, his forces crossed the Delaware River into Pennsylvania. By doing this, Washington hoped to draw the British forces inland. In that way, the British lines would be spread thin and the British supply lines would be harder to maintain. However, Washington also knew that American morale was low. They needed some kind of immediate success against the British.
