What is an outlier? how does it affect data like mean, median, and mode?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The mean is the average and an outlier will falsely move the mean toward the outlier and not give a true interpretation of the majority of the data. The median is the middle data value and will not be affected by an outlier any more than another data point that is not an outlier. The mode is the data value that appears most and will not be affected.

is this all in your own words?
