The air was cool, warmed only by a brilliant sun that stood high in the sky. The bare branches of the trees seemed lonely with the sudden loss of leaves. In sunny spots in the yard, the yellow, orange, and red patches of leaves were just calling the children home from school. Any minute, they would come running and laughing into the yard. Although it was still just early October, fall was coming to North Carolina.
