We x and y are his nickels and pennies. But we know he has to take out six coins. Now, we do know that he has at least six coins or more. We know he is taking out six coins, so he cannot have less, and it would not make sense if he had 6/5th of a coin. 

So we can say that x + y is BLANK to 6
