The correct answer is John because you could take out the word John and it would still be a sentence. The reason John is the appositive is because it is a word used to describe the noun before it: Son. I hope I helped

btw another example would be: My sister, the grumpy old person she was, always liked to pick on me. "the grumpy old person she was" would be the appositive!
