I'd appreciate if someone would help, I have been having trouble with these kinds of problems! At 5:00 p.m., the outside temperature was –9.2°C. By 10:00 p.m., the outside temperature had dropped 4.5°C. What was the outside temperature at 10:00 p.m.?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

draw up a number line like this |dw:1444961546460:dw|

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

-9.2 is between -9 and -10. It is closer to -9 |dw:1444961606870:dw|

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

when the temperature drops by 4.5 degrees, we go down the scale 4.5 units so we need to evaluate `-9.2 - 4.5` this is the same as adding 9.2 to 4.5 then making the result negative
