What is an example of an operating system? Microsoft Word RAM Linux All of the above

OpenStudy (nbarrera_t):

Do you think Microsoft Word is an operating system? mm no, it's a program. A text editor. Do you think RAM is an operationg system? Nope it's a a kind of memory. The answer is linux.

OpenStudy (rsmith6559):

Technically, the correct answer is "None of the above". Linux is a kernel only, not a complete OS. It needs to be paired with an OS before you have something. That said, the question is wrong, but the best choice is Linux.

OpenStudy (lyrae):

I disagree, the question is correct. Linux is a complete operating system. It runs on the Linux Kernel, but is in contrast with Windows a package driven OS. Several flavors and distributions (pre-made collections of packages) exists where the packages have better support and integration for each other, those can have names but are still Linux OSes. You can (with lots of time and knowledge) modify an existing distributions (don't like your file manager? switch it to another!) or create your own . "Linux (pronounced Listeni/ˈlɪnəks/ lin-əks[4][5] or, less frequently, /ˈlaɪnəks/ lyn-əks[5][6]) is a Unix-like and mostly POSIX-compliant[7] computer operating system (OS) assembled under the model of free and open-source software development and distribution." - Wikipedia
