Points Y and Z are the same distance from point X on a number line. The coordinate of point X is –7 and the coordinate of point Y is –1. What is the coordinate of point Z?

What is the distance between X and Y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (tyteen4a03):

In order to find out the coordinates of Z, you first need to know the distance between X and Y, since the distance between X and Y is the same as X and Z. Recall the distance formula: abs(y - x)

6

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Right..you know Y is 6 units away from X Which means Z will also be 6 units away from X So since we know Y = -1 Then Z will be in the opposite direction from that...meaning 6 units from X *-7* going left So \(\large -7 - 6 = ?\)
