OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can someone help me create a food web please?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I recommend you this website: https://www.hhmi.org/biointeractive/creating-chains-and-webs-model-ecological-relationships You will find a set of cards with animals of the Gorongosa National Park to build a trofic web of that ecosystem.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Alright. What kind of food web.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

?

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

I can help you through it, however I cannot give you a direct answer.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

First, what is a producer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Ghostedly The producer is the first level in the food chain & it serves as a food source for consumers.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Okay, so what do you think would go into that blank labeled "Producer"?

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

1. The producer is__________

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Ghostedly I'm not exactly sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Ghostedly What should I pick for this question? The ecosystem we are creating is a (circle one) Rainforest Tundra Deciduous Forest Desert

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Hmmm, I don't know. I believe your class has spoke of this, no?

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

What ecosystem is your class creating?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Ghostedly Rainforest

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

So there's your answer.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

For Producer... What does a producer do? Its name gives it away.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Ghostedly The producer - produces

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Exactly. It produces its own food. Now what can do this?

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Plants. So, let's say for Producer, put Plants.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Plants create their own food. They do this by using light energy from the Sun, carbon dioxide from the air and water from the soil to produce food.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Ghostedly Thank you that's a good example

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Put that where it says: "How do you know this is a producer" And where it asks for a producer, put Plants.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Now, for Herbivore. Do you know what a Herbivore is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The herbivore is the animals that feed on plants.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Yes, exactly. Could you think of any animals that eat plants?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Ghostedly monkeys, ants, squirrels?

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Hmm, not Monkeys, I don't think. And squirrels eat nuts. Now remember, nuts aren't producers. An example would be Cows, Sheep, Goats, and Deer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Cows, sheep, goat, & deer aren't in a rainforest though.. are they?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What about gorillas, elephants, and deer?

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Ahhh, I see. I seem to have forgotten.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And rhinoceros, chimpanzee?

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

You only need one, yes? Deer or elephants, it is your choice.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Yes, rhinos as well.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

I see that you need two Carnivores. Let's say a bear eats the elephant. What will eat the bear?

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Hmmm, I say we switch our food chain around a bit. Put Plants as the Producer. Grasshopper/other insect as a Herbivore. Frog as first Carnivore. And a Jaguar as the second carnivore.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Food web*

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

An example of a Decomposer is something that feeds on dead plants and animals. So, it would probably be... Fungi, Bacteria, Etc.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

And for the writing part, you could put something like: "A food web consists of many food chains. A food chain only follows just one path as animals find food. Example: A hawk eats a snake, which has eaten a frog, which has eaten a grasshopper, which has eaten grass. A food web shows the many different paths plants and animals are connected."

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

This is for number 3.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Yes, all I did was give you an example. You are to change any answer I give you so that it's in your own words.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Hmmm, I take it they have to be one of the ones we have used in out Food web?

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

What do you think is the answer? Which two animals would compete in our food web?

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Perhaps those two. Because I do not see a competition between the Frog and Jaguar, and between the Grasshopper and plants.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Sorry, Openstudy froze.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

And yes, you are right. This question wouldn't make any sense unless it was a Snake Vs Hawk.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

If you want. It would seem like a reasonable thing to do. Plant gets eaten by grasshopper, which gets eaten by rat, which gets eaten by snake, which gets eaten by hawk.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Or, you could have a mouse eating the plants.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

So, plants get eaten by mouse, which gets eaten by snake, which gets eaten by hawk.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Sorry if I have caused any confusion, but I did not know that you had to write about two animals having a competition.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

@Answers101

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

No, Producer: Plants, Herbivore: Mouse, 1st carnivore: Snake, 2nd carnivore: Hawk.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

No, the Hawk and Snake.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Yes, over the rat, I believe.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Well, without the Producers, the Herbivores would die out. And the Carnivores would die out as well, because they feed on Herbivores, and there isn't anything left to eat. I hope this isn't too confusing.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

There would be no more Mouses, I believe.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Plants would decrease.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

No, no. Your 1st carnivore is a snake.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Mouses don't eat meat. They are the herbivores.

OpenStudy (ghostedly):

Fungi, and Bacteria.
