OpenStudy (exoexoexo):

(ax/x)=b solve for x

OpenStudy (exoexoexo):

\[\frac{ ax }{ x }=b\]

zepdrix (zepdrix):

cancel out the common factor x,\[\large\rm \frac{a\cancel{x}}{\cancel{x}}=b\]Which leads to \(\large\rm a=b\).

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Note that x can not equal 0 because we have one in the denominator. But what happens is... Since all of our x's fell out of the equation, Every other x value will satisfy this equation when a and b are the same.

OpenStudy (exoexoexo):

so x can be any number?

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Any number `except 0`

zepdrix (zepdrix):

And that's only when a=b. Otherwise, no solutions exist when a and b are different numbers.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Kind of a tricky question, lot of stipulations :)
