From a physics perspective, what is the one primary practical advantage to having a longer barrel on any artillery? a) longer exposure of the artillery shell to the accelerating force. b)larger inertia c)less energy is needed to accelerate the artillery shell

OpenStudy (tylerd):

process of elimination here. which answer are you sure its not?

OpenStudy (tylerd):

if the barrel is longer, the shell is in the barrel longer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so A I think?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

while in the barrel, the hot expanding gas from the propellant is pushing the shell out; once the shell is in open air, the gas can expand outward in other directions and no longer principally or even effectively pushes on the shell. so it follows that a longer barrel gives a greater period of time for the force of the expanding gas to push and therefore accelerate the shell
