identify a pattern and find the next number in the number. a -3 b 0 c 1 d 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

really need help guys

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are these numbers part of the pattern or are they the multiple choice answers?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry pattern is 81,27,9,3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, what do you notice about these numbers? They're decreasing right? Now are they decreasing by subtraction or division?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The next number is 3^0 = 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

subtraction and thank you gowtham I need help explaining how to get answer!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@gowtham007 I would suggest not giving out the answer and giving an explanation. @sierrraa7 I think I worded that wrong. They are both decreasing. But we notice that the pattern is multiplicative. Meaning, there is a single factor that is being multiplied to each number to get the next. So, let's take the first two numbers. What did I have to multiply 81 by to get 27?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or if it helps, we can think of it the other way. What number did i have to multiply 27 by to get 81? Hint: \(27x=81 \rightarrow x=\frac{81}{27}\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes :) So that means that we had to multiply 81 by 1/3 to get to 27. Now let's look at the next one. We see that it follows the same pattern! If we divide 27 by 3, we get 9. And 9 by 3 is 3. And 3 by 3 is....?
