OpenStudy (nuccioreggie):

Sandra and Jenny spend a certain amount of money from their money box each month to buy plants. The table shows the relationship between the amount of money (y) remaining in Sandra's money box and the number of months (x): Number of Months (x) Amount Remaining (dollars) (y) 1 50 2 45 3 40 4 35 The equation shows the relationship between the amount of money, y, remaining in Jenny's money box and the number of months, x: Function 2: y = −6x + 50 Which statement explains which function shows a greater rate of change? Function 2 shows a greater rate of change because Jenny spends $6 each month and Sandra spends $5 each month. Function 2 shows a greater rate of change because Jenny spends $50 each month and Sandra spends $15 each month. Function 1 shows a greater rate of change because Sandra spends $15 each month and Jenny spends $44 each month. Function 1 shows a greater rate of change because Sandra spends $5 each month and Jenny spends –$6 each month.

@phi

OpenStudy (phi):

From the table, can you pick two (x, y) pairs ?

OpenStudy (nuccioreggie):

i did some math on papaer and i got that it was B

OpenStudy (nuccioreggie):

am i correct?

OpenStudy (phi):

They are asking about rate of change? rate of change is the slope, the number in front of the x the slope for function 2 is easy to find: find the number in front of the x in y= -6x+50 but you need the slope for function 1 get 2 points i.e. (x,y) pairs and find change in y divided by change in x

OpenStudy (nuccioreggie):

ohhh ok so its C

OpenStudy (nuccioreggie):

is it @phi

OpenStudy (phi):

two points from the table are (1,50) and (2,45) what is the change in y? i.e. what is 45-50 ?

OpenStudy (phi):

and what is the change in x: 2-1 = what ?

OpenStudy (nuccioreggie):

-5

OpenStudy (nuccioreggie):

1

OpenStudy (phi):

and change in x is 2-1=1 so the slope is -5/1 or -5 function 1 has a slope (a rate of change) of -5 function 2 has a slope (i.e. rate of change) of -6

OpenStudy (phi):

ignoring the minus sign (which means the change is going down) the -6 is steeper (goes down faster ) than the -5

OpenStudy (nuccioreggie):

so whicjh answer choice would that be

OpenStudy (phi):

so function 2 has more rate of change than function 1 which of the choices are possible answers?

OpenStudy (nuccioreggie):

a

OpenStudy (phi):

just knowing function 2 has a greater rate of change means either a or b c or d say function 1 has a greater rate of change, and that is not correct.

OpenStudy (phi):

but the answer is a because the rate is 6, and choice "a" says she spends 6

OpenStudy (nuccioreggie):

ohhhhh ok ty
