@ganeshie8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it'll be 12 inches after burning for 8 hours am I correct? I just need to know how to write the equation

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

That's right! you have very good intuition!

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

after 3 hours, it is 17 inch tall after 5 hours, it is 15 inch tall in 2 hours, it has reduced by 2 inch. that means it is reducing 1 inch each hour, so slope = -1

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

you know slope = -1 and you know a point, (3, 17) can you write the equation of line in point-slope form ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I believe you need two points to get it, thats only one

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

calculating slope requires two points, but we have figured out the slope already

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

maybe, lets try this can yo guess the height of candle at t=0 ? (before it has started burning)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

20 in

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

so the equation would be `h = 20 - 1t` which is same as `h = 20 - t`

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

that equation tells us that the candle starts at 20 inch height, and it reduces by 1 inch each hour

ok thanks! appreciate it
